YOUNG WOMAN WITH " DEATH SHAWL ". By Rose Hartman. Mudd Club. 1980. Tirage numérique d'après négatif sur papier Exhibition Fiber Base Paper. Signé par Rose Hartman. Exemplaire 1/1. Sujet : 50,8 x 33,1 cm (20' x 13'). Feuille : 55,9 x 43,2 cm (22' x 17'). No nightlife spot was more essential to the downtown scene than the Mudd Club. Everyone who wanted to be someone hung out at the Mudd, a dingy "cabaret" tucked into a converted warehouse at 77 White Street. The Mudd's rotating art exhibits curated by Keith Haring, live new wave and punk bands, and catwalk events by young fashion designers epitomized the polar opposite of the hard-edged glitz and glamour of Studio 54. After midnight, such celestial figures as David Bowie, Debby Harry, and Diane von Fürstenberg (all waved inside without charge), would mix and mingle with the club kids, decked-out decadents (reminiscent of Berlin's pre-war cabarets) who drank and danced the night away. I never knew what surprises were in store on any night, particularly at the "motif" parties when revelers would arrive in vintage clothing, elaborate masks, wild wigs, and bizarre make-up. The "Mother's Day" party was an irresistible hunting ground for me with its continuous parade of costumed club regulars and my opportunity to capture a combination of young originals and jet-setters. This striking, party-goer wearing a "Death shawl" probably spent hours perfecting her look. The seductive sound of Chic's "I Want Your Love" filled the air, and, as always, I felt energized by the visual carnival all around me.
