JAPON : Triptyque de KUNIYOSHI
JAPAN : Triptych of KUNIYOSHI, the famous duel between the colossal Benkeï and the young Yoshitsune on the Gojô bridge, separated by Tengu (mythical winged beings of 2 types: human-headed 'Konoha Tengu' and crow-headed 'Karasu Tengu'), outstanding fencers, who formed the young winner. Signature of the artist Ichiyûsai KUNIYOSHI in a coloquinte-shaped cartouche and seal of the artist Kiri paulownia on each board. Edited by Tsuzô Mitsuhiko (often read Enshû-ya Hikobei) in 1847-50. Superb colors, print, and excellent condition (tiny horizontal fold, unmarked). Traces of mica on the top, another sign of the excellence of the print. Posted at this bridge where he had decided to face the next 100 warriors who would pass there (note a draw with a woman, Osono, who will block his 'naginata' spear under his arm), the 100th was obviously this very slender and young Yoshitsune who, with a prodigious leap, without even taking out his blade, will stun his powerful and feared opponent, with a simple throw of his fan. From then on, this Japanese Port will become his most faithful friend and saviour on many occasions. (Cartridge story: Heike no kyosha akugyaku o nikumi Kuramayama no Sojobo o hajime shozan no hachi tengu go-soshi Ushiwakamaru no kagemi o soi Genke saikyo o hakaru zuiju no eiyu o fushimuru zu ) Notes: A similar copy in the British Museum No. 2008,3037.2050 Vertical Ôban Triptych by KUNIYOSHI (17971861). Edited by Tsuzô Mitsuhiko (often read Enshû-ya) ca 1847-50. Superb colors and impression, very good condition (very minor folding, nearly unvisible unless you carry by hand each sheet). The much famous duel on the Gojô Bridge, between the turbulous and colossal Benkei and the young Yoshitsune, who won without drawing his sword, just by throwing his fan to his opponent's head while making an outstanding jump. Full images, unbacked.
